COMMUNITY OVERVIEW
Cloverdale is strategically located at the I-70 and US 231 interchange halfway between Indianapolis and the Illinois state line. In 1999, Cloverdale was the 13th fastest growing community in the state having grown 48.2% from 1990 to 1999. That growth is reflected in the 2000 census count of 2,243. The community features a wide variety of housing opportunities, a top notch school district, and easy access to the recreational activities at Lieber State Park.
Ten miles north, Greencastle, the county seat of Putnam County, is a college community of over 10,000 people. As the home of DePauw University, the community enjoys a wide range of cultural and educational opportunities. Putnam County and its small communities such as Cloverdale retain their small town rural atmosphere while being only 40 minutes from the Indianapolis International Airport and 50 minutes from downtown Indianapolis. The county's strategic location also allows it to take advantage of the resources of Purdue University, Indiana University, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, and Indiana University - Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI).
In 1991, Greencastle was designated an "All-American City" by the National Civic League. More recently, Greencastle has been ranked as one of one-hundred best small towns in America. In fact, the author of The 100 Best Small Towns in America, Norm Crampton, lived in the community. Greencastle ranks as one of the 100 best because of its increase in young adult population, low crime rate (2nd best of the 100 towns), growth, and other factors.
With its attractive rural location, easy access to Indianapolis, and DePauw University, Putnam County has grown twice as fast as the state over the last several years. Population has increased from 30,315 to over 36,000 in 2000. As local employment opportunities have increased, local leaders have been encouraging investment in housing at a variety of price points.
