Greencastle, county seat of Putnam County, is located 40
miles west of Indianapolis
and 35 miles east of Terre
Haute. U.S. 36 is nine miles north and I-70 is eight
miles south
of the city.
Easy access is available to Indianapolis International
Airport via US 40 or I-70.

Local property taxes are assessed on a base of
100% True Tax Value or approximately market
value...current rates for adjacent townships
available upon request. Local property taxes are
assessed on the depreciated value of business
personal property. Most inventory that is
destined for out of state shipment, including
parts shipped to other Indiana locations that
end up being shipped out of state, are exempt
from property taxes. |

County Adjusted Gross Income Tax equals 1.25% of
personal income with the funds used for local
property tax relief. State sales tax of 6%
on all retail sales - food products and certain
other items are exempt. |

In 2002, the Indiana General Assembly passed a
historic revision of Indiana's tax code. The
bill simplified and modernized the state's tax
structure. Some of the elements of the
legislation have already taken effect, others
occurred at the end of 2002 or the beginning of
2003. This revision insured that state taxes
remain substantially lower than many other
states. Because of this new legislation, it is
recommended that one review their business
situation with their tax accountant.
The Indiana Department of Commerce can provide
detailed tax estimates for state taxes. |

Indiana Corporate Adjusted Gross Income Tax |
|
All corporations, except S corporations and
not-for-profit organizations, doing business in
Indiana are subject to the Corporate Adjusted
Gross Income Tax. |
|
The current rate is 8.5% on net taxable income.
The rate is paid on federal taxable income with
four modifications: |
|
1. |
Subtract any income that federal law or the
Constitution prohibits Indiana from taxing. |
|
2. |
Add deductions allowed under federal law for
charitable contributions. |
|
3. |
Add deductions allowed under federal law for
state income taxes and local property taxes. |
|
4. |
Apportion income to Indiana based on the average
percentage of property owned in Indiana,
percentage of payroll paid in Indiana, and twice
the percentage of sales volume attributable to
Indiana. |

Indiana Unemployment Tax |
|
Employers pay unemployment tax on the first
$7,000 of an employees wages. For new
employees, the rate is approximately 2.7%. The
rate for experienced employees averages about
1.7%. The minimum rate is 0.2% and the maximum
rate is 5.5%. |

Recreation
|
|
Greencastle has two city parks including a
public swimming pool, tennis courts, fishing,
playgrounds, and picnic areas. Big Walnut
Sports Park, east of Greencastle, offers 80
acres of team sport facilities. Windy Hill
Country Club, located north of town, offers a 9
hole private golf course and swimming pool. Two
18 hole public golf courses are located in the
county. Seven state parks are within a one-hour
drive. Two recreational lakes are available
within 30 miles including Lieber State
Recreation Area located in southern Putnam
County.
People Pathways continues to develop a system of
hiking, biking, walking, and running trails
connecting schools, town, industry, and
recreational activities around the community. A
3.2 mile trail connects Fillmore to Greencastle.
DePauw University offers NCAA Division III men's
and women's sports and a wide variety of
cultural activities from art to theater. The
University recently opened a 480 acre nature
preserve. The Putnam County Library is located
in a recently enlarged facility in Greencastle.
The Putnam County Playhouse is well known for
its Summer Stock theater schedule.
Less than one-hour away, Indianapolis hosts a
wide range of amenities including the arts,
concerts, museums, professional sports and
theater. |
