Ethanol Information

The Greencastle/Putnam County Development Center is providing these links for informational purposes.  The Development Center does not endorse any positions taken by any of the organizations listed.  As with any information found on the web, it is up to the user to determine the validity and timeliness of the information.  Additional information can be found through any of the web search engines.  Links may be added to this site from time to time as additional resources become known.  Additional questions can be directed to the Greencastle/Putnam County  Development Center.

GENERAL AGRICULTURAL INFORMATION AND LINKS

Agriculture Net - The State of Indiana, Office of the Commissioner of Agriculture offers a page of links for the agricultural community.  The links include state agencies, associations, federal resources, and agri-business publications.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ETHANOL

American Coalition for Ethanol - This organization promotes the development of the ethanol industry to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil imports and to provide alternative uses for farm products.  The site provides information and a variety of links related to ethanol.

Canadian Renewable Fuels Association - This association promotes the use of bio-fuels such as bio-diesel and ethanol for automotive transportation in Canada.

Ethanol Producers and Consumers - This non-profit organization promotes

Governors' Ethanol Coalition - The State of Indiana is a member of this organization that promotes the use of ethanol.  The site provides detailed information about state ethanol legislation.

National Corn Growers Association - This agricultural organization promotes the interests of corn growers.  The NCGA has been promoting the production of ethanol for many years.

Renewable Fuels Association - This national trade association for the U.S. ethanol industry promotes the use and development of renewable fuels.  Ethanol is just one type of fuel that the organization promotes.  The Association just completed a study, Ethanol and the Local Community , that estimated the local economic benefits of building and operating an ethanol plant.

U. S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE            

The United States Department of Agriculture promotes the use of renewable fuels, rural development and agricultural research to benefit the agricultural community and rural America.

Agricultural Research Service - This agency conducts research on a variety of agriculture topics including renewable fuels, ethanol, and the production of value added products.

USDA Bio-Fuels Information

Rural Development - This agency promotes community and economic development activities in rural communities throughout the country.

U. S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY                     

The Department of Energy promotes the use of alternative fuels for transportation.

Alternative Fuels Data Center -  This site offers news and information about alternative fuels.  An on-line newsletter is published several times a year.

Office of Transportation Technologies - This research agency works in a variety of transportation technology areas including alternative fuels.

STATE GOVERNMENTS AND ASSOCIATIONS

Access Indiana Use the search function on the home page to type in "ethanol" to pull up over 200 documents related to ethanol.  Many of the documents relate to action by the legislature, legislative hearings, and state law.

Illinois Corn - Operated by the Illinois Corn Growers Association and the Illinois Corn Marketing Board, this site provides links and resources for corn farmers in the state of Illinois.  The association promotes the use of corn in a variety of products including ethanol.

Iowa Corn - Used to promote corn in Iowa, the site provides information for farmers in the state.  The site includes information about ethanol production and use and links to other ethanol sites.

Minnesota Ethanol - The Minnesota Department of Agriculture offers a web site for ethanol production in the state.  The site includes information on various programs offered by the state, links to producers and information on the economic impact of the ethanol industry in the state.

Nebraska Ethanol Board - This state board promotes the production of ethanol in the state of Nebraska.  The site includes links to producers in the state.

ETHANOL - PRODUCERS                               

Many ethanol producers have web sites that provide information about their operations.  Below are just a few as a sample of operations in the Midwest.  Some of the state associations have links to producers in their state.

Adkins Energy LLC - This plant is the result of cooperation between the Adkins Energy Cooperative and several private companies that formed Adkins Energy LLC.  The cooperative was formed with 349 members and local investors from twelve counties in Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.  The plant, now under construction, will produce 40 million gallons of ethanol, 116,000 tons of carbon dioxide, and 132,000 tons of DDGS.

Chippewa Valley Ethanol Company - This farmer owned limited liability company operates a 17 million gallon per year dry grind plant in Benson, Minnesota.

Dakota Ethanol LLC - This company operates a 40 million gallon per year dry grind plant in Wentworth, South Dakota.

Ethanol 2000 LLP - This limited liability partnership was formed by the Southwest Minnesota Fuels Cooperative and Broin Enterprises.  The original plant was designed to produce 11.5 million gallons of ethanol per year.  The plant capacity has been increased to 27.5 million gallons per year.  As of September 2000, the plant was operating at 30 million gallons per year.

Williams Bio-Energy - Bio-Energy is a division of Williams Energy.  The company operates or has partnerships in a variety of wet-grind and dry-grind ethanol plants in the Midwest.  Williams Energy also markets ethanol on a wholesale and retail basis.

ETHANOL PRODUCTION PROCESS                  

Quick Germ Quick Fiber Production Process - The quick germ quick fiber process (QGQF) removes parts of the corn kernel prior to processing into ethanol.  The parts are then processed separately into other value added products.  This process was developed at the University of Illinois.  The QGQF process is under consideration as one of two production methods for the ethanol plant that is under study.
